Education

The introduction of A Curriculum for Excellence provides the opportunity of recognising that every opportunity is a learning opportunity and fully embrases the 24 hour curriculum.

The delivery of the curriculum reflects that everyone has different learninpg styles and the pace of learning varies.  Man of the children and young people who attend Geilsland have experienced difficulties in the past.

The curriculum will be flexible in its delivery to ensure that it builds on the strengths of individuals which in turn supports areas for development.  An integral aspect of htis will be to provide Experiential Learning Opportunities where learning can be used in everyday scenarios and ensuring that individual needs are met and that children and young people are;

- Successful learners
- Confident individuals
- Effective Contributors
- Responsible Citizens

The curriculum at Geilsland focuses on preparing young people to make a real contribution to their commuities as adults.  There is a high emphasis on improving core skills and using 'Skills for Work' programme developing real transferable skills for adult life.

Short Term Respite

We are able to offer short term respite/crisis care accommodation.  The focus is on maintaining current positive links with young people's communities and families.  Through a comprehensive integrated assessment process individual needs are identified and solution suggested.  This hasresulted in a number of young people staying for less than 12 weeks on the Geilsland campus.  We are also able to offer support in the longer term through our residential service if appropriate.

Preparation for Independent Living

We have 2 independent houses providing support and preparation for independent living.  Each house can accommodate 2 young people.

Social Enterprise

Developing from our 'Skills for Work' education programme we plan to group our preparation for the world of work by offering real opportunities to develop skills in areas such as construction and landscaping.  The Skills for Work curriculum is accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Award (SQA).  Geilsland is also able to offer other nationally recognised awards icluding ASDAN, LANTRA, CSCS,Microsoft, etc.

Day Service

We have been developoing a day service along a similar model to that operated from Ballikinrain campus.  We currently offer support for up to 5 young people.
